Former police officer sentenced to life imprisonment for wife’s murder

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the Mpumalanga High Court’s decision to sentence former police officer Lucky Sandile Maduna (37) to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Nonkululeko Mtsweni (27), and an additional 10 years for the attempted murder of her friend. The sentences will run concurrently.

The court heard that the incident occurred on 3 October 2023 in Barberton, where an argument between the couple escalated after a night of drinking. Maduna fatally assaulted his wife with a beer bottle and later attacked her friend, who tried to intervene.

The court found no substantial and compelling reasons to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence, citing the brutality of the attack and the impact on the victim’s family. The NPA said the ruling reinforces accountability and the justice system’s stance against gender-based violence and femicide.
