Five people have lost their lives and three others were injured after a single vehicle overturned on the N10 between Middelburg and Nxuba in the Chris Hani District.
The crash occurred at approximately 17:45 on Monday, 4 May 2026. According to preliminary reports, the vehicle, which was travelling from Middelburg towards Nxuba, was carrying eight occupants, including the driver, and is believed to have been overloaded.
It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. Five occupants — three adult men and two adult women were declared dead at the scene. The driver is among those who died.
The three surviving passengers sustained injuries and were transported to Middelburg Provincial Hospital for further medical treatment.
Authorities say the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, with both provincial and national Department of Transport officials involved in the probe.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened at South African Police Service.
