Police sergeant Fannie Nkosi has claimed he was questioned by Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) officials about the alleged relationship between businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, insisting: “I knew nothing about any corrupt relationships he was asking about.”
Nkosi’s allegations are contained in a sworn affidavit read before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday, in which he claims nine IDAC officials visited him on 13 July—the same day Matlala’s plea agreement in the R228 million corruption case collapsed.
According to the affidavit, one of the investigators, identified as Suneel Bellochun, questioned Nkosi about Masemola and Khumalo. Nkosi said he responded: “I knew Vusimuzi Matlala had close ties with Lieutenant General Sibiya and Major General Khan.”
Nkosi further alleged that Bellochun rejected his explanation about how he came into possession of Matlala’s bank card.
“Bellochun informed me that I must not give him a nonsensical explanation about Matlala’s card being left in the jet ski boat because Matlala had already given him a clear explanation of how I came to possess the bank card,” the affidavit states.
The jailed police sergeant also claimed investigators refused his request to have his legal representative present during the interview and photographed him without his consent.
Responding to the allegations, former IDAC head Andrea Johnson told the Madlanga Commission that, if Nkosi’s account is accurate, the conduct of the investigators would be “very unbecoming.” She said investigators should communicate through an accused person’s legal representative before conducting an interview.
