Three suspected criminals were shot and killed during a dramatic gun battle with police in Mariannhill, west of Durban, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
According to police, officers acted on intelligence regarding the whereabouts of suspects wanted in connection with a kidnapping and fraud case in Greenwood Park. The suspects were also allegedly in illegal possession of firearms.
Police spotted the suspects travelling along Milky Way Road and attempted to stop their vehicle. However, the driver allegedly ignored police instructions and sped away, triggering a high-speed chase through the area.
During the pursuit, a fierce shootout erupted between the suspects and police. The suspects’ vehicle reportedly lost control before crashing into a tree.
All three suspects sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire. No police officers were injured.
Police recovered two firearms and several rounds of ammunition at the scene. Authorities have launched further investigations to determine whether the suspects may be linked to other serious crimes in KwaZulu-Natal.
