Police have recovered illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R50,000 and seized a pellet gun after two suspects abandoned a vehicle and fled during an operation in the Capricorn District.
The SAPS Flying Squad acted on information from community members about a white Mercedes-Benz Vito allegedly being used to distribute illicit cigarettes to local shops.
Police traced the vehicle to Tibane Crossing at Mabopane Village, where it was parked alongside two white Toyota Hilux bakkies. When officers activated the blue lights of their marked patrol vehicle, the two Hilux bakkies sped off, while the occupants of the Mercedes-Benz Vito fled on foot.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 384 cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes, valued at an estimated R50,000, and a pellet gun. The Mercedes-Benz Vito was also seized.
Police are continuing their investigations to trace and arrest the suspects.
