Broos confident Bafana is ready for Mexico clash

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says his team will be ready for their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against co-hosts Mexico at Estadio Azteca on Thursday.

The squad has been training in Pachuca, Mexico, since last week to adapt to the altitude ahead of the tournament.

Broos described Mexico as a strong and well-balanced side but believes South Africa can compete.

“They are dangerous in every area. It is a very complete team, with a lot of movement and strong team spirit. We will have to be at our best if we want a good result.”

Despite the challenge, the Belgian coach remains optimistic.

“We must not think we have no chance against Mexico, because that is not true either. But we have to prepare very well and play at our best level.”

Broos also thanked South Africans for their support ahead of the country’s first World Cup appearance since 2010.

“The whole country is behind us, and we are playing for everyone who believes in us.”

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to unite behind the national team, saying Bafana Bafana carries the hopes of more than 62 million citizens into the tournament.
