The Chairperson of the Board at Bergview College, Dannie Van Zyl, has denied reports that the school’s principal, Jaco Pieterse, was fired. Speaking to The Informer, Van Zyl clarified that the school and Pieterse had reached a mutual agreement to terminate his employment.
When asked what prompted the separation, Van Zyl referred to a recent interview on eNCA featuring AfriForum spokesperson Barry Bateman. In the interview, Bateman explained that following extensive negotiations, both parties agreed to part ways. “It was a mutual decision by the parties,” he said.
Bateman added that the decision was influenced by a damaging misinformation campaign, which falsely accused Pieterse of raping a seven-year-old girl. The unfounded claims sparked public protests outside the school and threats against Pieterse’s life, making his continued presence at Bergview College untenable.
In an official statement, Van Zyl strongly condemned the allegations and the public reaction that followed, stating that no evidence had ever supported the serious accusations leveled against Pieterse.
“The dignity and integrity of our Principal have, regrettably, been subjected to an orchestrated campaign of reputational harm founded entirely on falsehoods,” Van Zyl said.
He emphasized that Pieterse was never subjected to any internal disciplinary process, nor did any situation arise that would have warranted one. “His professional record is exemplary, his conduct irreproachable, and his commitment to education and learner safety beyond reproach,” he added.
The school expressed unwavering support for Pieterse and condemned what it described as “unwarranted and irresponsible public vilification.”
“The trauma and harm inflicted upon him and his family are immeasurable and entirely undeserved,” Van Zyl said.
Bergview College reaffirmed its commitment to justice, truth, and the rule of law, urging the public and media to act with greater responsibility when handling sensitive issues involving unproven allegations.
“Bergview College stands by Mr Pieterse. We commend his resilience and dignity in the face of unfounded attacks,” the statement concluded.
