Alleged political fixer Brown Mogotsi is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Wednesday for the setting of a trial date after two unsuccessful bail applications.
Mogotsi, who has been in custody since his arrest on 15 May, faces charges of perjury, defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and discharging a firearm in a public place.
The charges relate to an alleged staged assassination attempt in Vosloorus in November 2025. The State alleges Mogotsi fired 11 shots into his own vehicle before falsely reporting to police that he had been ambushed by unknown gunmen.
Prosecutors say ballistic evidence and CCTV footage contradict his version, alleging the vehicle was stationary and unoccupied when it was shot. Investigators also claim the missing 9mm firearm used in the incident is linked to separate murder and attempted murder cases.
Mogotsi’s first bail application was dismissed on 4 June after the court found he had failed to provide a verifiable residential address. His second application was rejected on 29 June after Magistrate Annalise Tlhapi ruled that no new facts had been presented to justify his release.
The matter is now expected to proceed to trial, with the court set to determine a trial date.
