Farmers from across the Alfred Nzo District gathered at North End Stadium in Matatiele for the annual Alfred Nzo District Agricultural Show, showcasing livestock and fresh produce while connecting with potential buyers and agricultural stakeholders.
The event, organised by the Department of Agriculture (DoA), aims to strengthen market access for smallholder farmers and increase their participation in the mainstream economy.
Despite early morning showers, the event attracted a strong community turnout, with residents purchasing fresh produce and livestock products and supporting local farmers.
The agricultural show also provided farmers with an opportunity to share knowledge, network and learn more about market requirements.
Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe praised farmers for their resilience and commitment to the sector.
“Agriculture is a mainstay and the backbone of economic development in this province. I am very happy today to see that people in Alfred Nzo are working very hard to alleviate poverty,” Kontsiwe said.
She said the shows allow farmers to sell their products while learning from one another and engaging directly with market agents.
“Through these shows people are not only selling their produce but they are able to gain experience from each other and talk to market agents and to get a sense of what is needed in order to gain stable income for their business,” she said.
