ActionSA says it has laid criminal charges against Cyril Ramaphosa in relation to the controversial Phala Phala matter.
The party said the charges include alleged contravention of Section 34(1)(b) of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA), as well as allegations of perjury and fraud.
According to ActionSA, the charges stem from concerns that the true amount of money stolen during the burglary at the President’s Phala Phala farm may have been concealed or under-disclosed.
The party claims information now in the public domain suggests the amount stolen could have exceeded R15 million, significantly higher than the widely reported figure of about USD580,000.
ActionSA also cited reports that cash flow analyses conducted by the National Prosecuting Authority on one of the accused in the burglary allegedly raised questions about the actual amount of money involved.
“These developments reinforce ActionSA’s long-standing view that the South African public has not been told the full truth about Phala Phala,” the party said.
The party argued that any deliberate failure to disclose material information relating to the burglary raises serious legal and constitutional concerns, while any intentional misrepresentation under oath could amount to perjury and fraud.
“South Africa cannot continue down a path where accountability depends on political status or public office. The rule of law must apply equally to all, including the President of the Republic,” ActionSA said.
The development places renewed political pressure on the Presidency as scrutiny over the Phala Phala scandal continues.
