SAPS tightens security during Malema court proceedings in East London

The South African Police Service (SAPS) says it continues to ensure the safety and security of all stakeholders during the court proceedings of Julius Malema at the East London Magistrate’s Court in KuGompo City on Wednesday.

Police have confirmed that adequate personnel have been deployed following a detailed risk assessment to safeguard court officials, the accused, legal teams, the media, and members of the public. While specific operational details remain undisclosed for security reasons, a visibly increased police presence is expected both inside and outside the court precinct.

Public Order Police and visible policing units will be on the ground to maintain order, prevent disruptions, and ensure that court proceedings continue peacefully and without incident.

Motorists have been advised of road closures around key routes near the court, including Oxford Street, Fleet Street, surrounding CBD roads, and access routes into central KuGompo City. Authorities have recommended alternative routes such as the N2 bypass, R72 outer sections, and R346 to avoid congestion.

SAPS has urged the public to steer clear of the court area during the proceedings and to follow instructions from law enforcement officers. Officials also warned against the spread of unverified information on social media.

Police reiterated that any acts of lawlessness will not be tolerated, with offenders set to face the full might of the law.
