Mamelodi Sundowns are the new MTN8 champions after defeating Orlando Pirates 2-0 in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.
The Brazilians ended Pirates’ four-year reign as champions to claim their first MTN8 title since 2021.
Teboho Mokoena opened the scoring in the 11th minute, capitalising on a clever touch from Thabang Matuludi to give Sundowns an early lead.
Pirates fought to get back into the match and were awarded a penalty in the second half, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a crucial save to deny Gamphani Lungu and preserve Sundowns’ advantage.
Sundowns sealed the victory deep into stoppage time when substitute Iqraam Rayners converted a penalty to make it 2-0.
The victory delivered domestic silverware to coach Miguel Cardoso and ended Pirates’ hopes of securing a fifth consecutive MTN8 title.
