A 46-year-old man from Mapfontein, Sibongiseni Godfrey Bevu, who was reported missing last week, has been found dead in a water-filled ditch.
Bevu was last seen on 27 September 2026 and was subsequently reported missing at Maluti Police Station.
According to his cousin, Ntandazo Bevu, the body was discovered on Tuesday morning after a young child walking to a neighbour’s house noticed a jacket lying in a ditch. The child reportedly alerted nearby residents, who went to investigate and discovered a body in the water.
The body was later identified as that of Bevu. His cousin said it appeared that he had been in the water for several days.
Ntandazo told The Informer that visible injuries, including what appeared to be stab wounds to Bevu’s face, had raised suspicions that he may have been involved in a fight before his death. He alleged that Bevu may have been dumped in the ditch, although the circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been confirmed.
Police were at the scene on Tuesday morning awaiting the arrival of a pathologist to remove the body.
Maluti Police have opened a murder docket, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding Bevu’s death are continuing.
The family and community are now awaiting the outcome of the police investigation and the post-mortem examination, which is expected to help establish the cause and circumstances of his death.
