Tsolo rapist gets eight life sentences

MTHATHA: The National Prosecuting Authority has secured eight life sentences against 32-year-old Thabile “Bhino” Nyakiso for a series of rapes committed in Tsolo between 2016 and 2017.

Nyakiso was also sentenced to 15 years for each of three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and 12 months for common robbery.

Acting Judge Fikile Ntayiya recommended that he not be considered for parole until he has served 30 years.

The court heard that Nyakiso targeted women walking between school or work and New Homes and Crossbow townships, threatening them with a knife.

His victims included women and girls aged between 16 and 39. Some were also robbed of money, bank cards and cellphones.

DNA evidence linked Nyakiso to samples collected from several victims. He pleaded guilty but challenged the accuracy of the DNA evidence.

The court found that Nyakiso had shown no remorse. He also has another rape case pending before the same court.

Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate Samkelo Mtwana welcomed the sentence, saying it reaffirmed the NPA’s commitment to fighting violent crime.
