President Cyril Ramaphosa has granted the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry a final extension to complete its work and submit its final report.
The deadline has been moved from 16 November 2026 to 25 January 2027, the Presidency confirmed.
The Presidency said the extension would allow the Commission to process additional evidence, including testimony from experts who have made recommendations relating to its terms of reference.
“President Ramaphosa once again expresses his deepest appreciation for the work conducted by the Commission as well as for the manner in which law enforcement agencies are following up on testimony emerging from Commission hearings,” the Presidency said.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels welcomed the extension, saying it would give the inquiry additional time to complete outstanding testimony and finalise its report.
“This extension to 25 January 2027 will allow the Commission to hear outstanding testimony and write the Final Report,” Michaels said.
The Commission has so far submitted two interim reports to the President. The second interim report was submitted on 29 May 2026 and contained further recommendations and referrals for investigation and possible prosecution.
The Commission was established by President Ramaphosa in July 2025 following allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi concerning criminality, political interference and corruption within the criminal justice system.
Its terms of reference include investigating alleged infiltration of law enforcement, intelligence and other institutions within the criminal justice system by criminal syndicates.
The inquiry is also examining allegations involving the South African Police Service, the National Prosecuting Authority, intelligence structures, the judiciary, correctional services and metropolitan police departments.
The latest extension follows an earlier extension granted in July, when the final reporting deadline was moved from 31 August to 16 November 2026 to allow the Commission to complete outstanding areas of its investigation.
The Commission is now expected to submit its final report to President Ramaphosa by 25 January 2027.
