Two arrested as police seize drugs worth nearly R50,000 in Makhanda and Joza

Two men have been arrested after police seized illicit drugs worth nearly R50,000 during an intelligence-driven operation in Makhanda and Joza.

The operation was carried out on Wednesday, 16 September, following intelligence gathered by the Makhanda Crime Intelligence Unit.

Police searched properties in Hallier Street, Makhanda, and Vellem Street in Joza, seizing 195 grams of Khat, 16 grams of Tik, 19 packets of Tik and Mandrax tablets.

A 44-year-old man was arrested in Makhanda for dealing in drugs, while a 50-year-old man was arrested on the same charge in Joza.

Both suspects are expected to appear in the Makhanda Magistrates’ Court.

Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Major General Thandiswa Kupiso praised the different police units involved, saying the operation demonstrated the value of intelligence-led policing in disrupting drug networks.

“We will maintain this intelligence-led momentum to reclaim our neighbourhoods and ensure that perpetrators of drug trafficking face the full might of the law,” said Kupiso.
