A former SAPS lieutenant colonel has been convicted of 80 counts of fraud and 80 counts of money laundering after pleading guilty to charges involving more than R1.2 million.
Lieutenant Colonel Pieter Andries Nel, formerly Head of Financial Services at the SAPS ZF Mgcawu District in Upington, allegedly created and authorised fraudulent payments into his personal bank account between 2022 and 2024.
The Hawks arrested Nel at his Upington home on 28 May 2025. He was discharged from SAPS in September 2024 following a disciplinary process, with R1.258 million deducted from his pension to recover the money.
Northern Cape Hawks head, Major General Stephen Mabuela congratulated the investigators and prosecutors, stressing that police members are expected to maintain high standards of integrity.
Nel will return to court on 2 December 2026 for sentencing.
