Electoral Court dismisses ANC appeal over candidate list submissions

The Electoral Court has dismissed the African National Congress (ANC)’s appeal against the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) over the submission of councillor candidate lists for the November 2026 Local Government Elections.

The ruling was handed down on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, in Bloemfontein, Free State, by a panel comprising Judges Lebogang Modiba and Nobahle Mangcu-Lockwood, and Professor Moses Phooko.

The ANC approached the court after failing to meet the IEC’s deadline for submitting candidate lists in some municipalities.

The ANC’s candidate list submission dispute affected municipalities in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, with reports also identifying Mpumalanga among the provinces involved.

The party blamed technical glitches on the IEC’s online system for its failure to submit some councillor candidate lists before the deadline, while the commission disputed the claim.

The court made no order as to costs.
