Nine arrested after alleged armed robberies at Tsolo shops

Nine men aged between 18 and 23 are expected to appear in the Qumbu and Tsolo Magistrates’ Courts on Friday, 31 July, following their arrest in connection with two-armed business robberies in Tsolo.

According to police, the suspects allegedly split into two groups and robbed two shops simultaneously in the Tsolo CBD on Tuesday at about 1pm before fleeing in a Toyota bakkie towards Qumbu.

Tsolo police alerted their counterparts in Qumbu, who tracked the suspects to a house in Qumbu. Police allegedly found the nine suspects counting cash believed to have been stolen during the robberies.

During the operation, officers recovered a 9mm pistol with an erased serial number, ammunition, a 9mm replica firearm, and five cellphones believed to have been stolen during an earlier business robbery in Qumbu.

The suspects face charges including armed business robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen property. Police said investigations are continuing to determine whether the suspects are linked to other crimes in the area.

OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Norman Modishana commended officers from the neighbouring police stations for their teamwork.

“Working together as a united team is essential in achieving our common goal of fighting crime and bringing offenders to justice,” Modishana said.
