The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has confirmed a fatal road crash involving three trucks and a light motor vehicle on the N2 at Gamtoos Hill, prompting the closure of the highway.
Emergency services, traffic law enforcement officers and other role players remain at the scene carrying out rescue, recovery and crash investigation operations.
The N2 is completely closed and is expected to remain shut for most of the morning. Motorists are urged to use the R102 as an alternative route and should expect delays in the surrounding area.
The department said the number of fatalities and injuries, as well as the circumstances surrounding the crash, are still being verified. A comprehensive update will be issued once all the details have been confirmed.
