Ramaphosa’s bid to halt impeachment inquiry faces resistance as committee pushes ahead

A high-stakes legal battle is unfolding after the chairperson of Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee, Makashule Gana, formally opposed an urgent court application by President Cyril Ramaphosa aimed at stopping the committee’s work.

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Gana filed an affidavit opposing Ramaphosa’s bid to interdict the committee from proceeding with its investigation. The move sets the stage for a crucial showdown in the Western Cape High Court, where the matter is scheduled to be heard on 15 and 16 July 2026.

Despite the legal challenge from the country’s highest office, the impeachment committee has signalled it has no intention of backing down. The committee confirmed it will continue with its mandate and is expected to meet on Wednesday, 24 June, to consider draft terms of reference and discuss the appointment of evidence leaders.
