Modiba magic gives Sundowns crucial edge in CAF Champions league final

Mamelodi Sundowns took a giant step toward CAF Champions League glory after edging Moroccan giants AS FAR Rabat 1-0 in a tense first-leg final clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The Brazilians lit up Pretoria with a disciplined and energetic performance, with defender Aubrey Modiba emerging as the hero of the night after producing a stunning free-kick just before halftime.

Modiba curled the ball beautifully from outside the penalty area, leaving the AS FAR goalkeeper with no chance and sending the home crowd into celebration as Sundowns grabbed a priceless advantage ahead of the return leg in Rabat.

Despite the victory, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes his side should have buried the contest with more goals after creating several dangerous opportunities.

Speaking after the match, Cardoso praised his players for matching the intensity of the Moroccan side and showing they can compete with any team on the continent.

The Portuguese tactician highlighted Sundowns’ defensive discipline, especially during transitions, but admitted there is still work to do in the attacking department.

He explained that AS FAR’s aggressive use of full-backs made counter-attacking difficult and limited space in wide areas. Cardoso stressed that his side will need better ball control and smarter movement in the second leg to create more openings and avoid unnecessary pressure away from home.

With a slender 1-0 lead, Sundowns now head to Morocco knowing the job is far from finished, but confidence will be sky-high after another composed continental display.

The second leg in Rabat promises fireworks as Sundowns chase African glory and look to bring the prestigious CAF Champions League trophy back to South Africa.
