SAPS probes fatal N1 crashes linked to Motsoaledi’s official vehicle

The South African Police Service is investigating two fatal crashes on the N1 near Bela-Bela involving the official vehicle of Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a woman was attempting to cross the highway with her two children, including a baby strapped to her back, when they were struck by the Minister’s vehicle.

The mother and her baby died in the collision, while the second child survived.

Police said the family had reportedly been trying to reach the scene where the woman’s husband had allegedly been killed in an earlier crash involving an off-duty police officer.

“Statements were subsequently obtained from those present at the scene,” SAPS said.

Two culpable homicide cases have been opened, while the Independent Police Investigative Directorate is leading the investigation because both drivers involved are SAPS members.
