The leader of the National Coloured Congress, Faziel Adams, is expected to return to the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court for his formal bail application in a case linked to allegations that he interfered in the investigation into the 2017 murder of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.
Adams faces three counts of fraud and two counts of defeating or obstructing the administration of justice.
According to the state, Adams allegedly made unauthorized visits to Westville prison between November 2024 and January 2025 while falsely claiming to be acting in his official capacity as a member of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police.
Prosecutors allege that the visits formed part of an attempt to interfere with aspects of the investigation surrounding Magaqa’s murder, a case that has remained under intense public scrutiny since the former ANC Youth League leader was assassinated in KwaZulu-Natal nearly a decade ago.
The state previously requested additional time to oppose bail, arguing that the matter was serious and required further assessment. Following the application, Adams was ordered to remain in custody at a secret location known only to his legal representatives and the court.
His detention at an undisclosed facility has raised security concerns surrounding the case, with authorities citing the sensitive nature of the allegations and the high-profile individuals connected to the matter.
During the upcoming proceedings, Adams is expected to formally apply for bail while prosecutors are likely to oppose his release, citing concerns over possible interference with witnesses and the integrity of ongoing investigations.
