Bellarmine Mugabe deported after paying R600,000 fine

Bellarmine Mugabe, 28, the son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has been deported from South Africa after paying a R600,000 fine following his sentencing in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.

Mugabe and his cousin, Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze, 32, appeared in court on Wednesday morning after being in custody since mid-February. The charges stem from an incident in which a gardener was shot at the family’s home in Hyde Park.

During proceedings, Mugabe admitted to being in South Africa illegally and to pointing a toy gun in a separate incident. Matonhodze, meanwhile, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and other related charges.

The court fined Mugabe R600,000 on two counts, with the alternative of 24 months’ imprisonment should he fail to pay. It also ordered his immediate deportation, directing police to escort him to OR Tambo International Airport for removal from the country.

Meanwhile, Matonhodze has been sentenced to three years’ direct imprisonment for his role in the crime.

Authorities have confirmed that Mugabe has since been deported in line with the court order.
