A fire suspected to be an act of arson has destroyed the offices of Ikhwezi Publishers in the early hours of 27 April, as the country prepared to commemorate Freedom Day. The incident has left the company without critical equipment, documents, and production materials essential to its operations.
The Greater Kokstad Fire Department responded swiftly to the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze. Preliminary witness reports suggest that an unknown individual may have gained entry into the premises before deliberately setting the fire.
According to Asanda Mantshongo, Publisher of Ikhwezi Publishers, the circumstances surrounding the incident point to intentional destruction rather than theft. Mantshongo was out of town at her holiday home in Margate at the time and returned immediately upon receiving news of the fire.
“During an inspection of the damage, remains of high-value equipment, including a Lenovo Yoga laptop used for newspaper design, were recovered from the debris. This indicates that the motive was not theft, but rather a deliberate attempt to destroy the business,” said Mantshongo.
The fire resulted in the complete loss of office equipment, important documentation, and samples of published and promotional materials.
A case has been opened with the South African Police Service, while the building owner’s insurance company has initiated an independent investigation. Authorities are currently following several leads.
Mantshongo further noted that, based on witness accounts, an individual described as a fellow publisher was seen near the premises approximately two hours after the fire had been extinguished. This information has been formally submitted to investigators as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Despite the significant setback, Mantshongo affirmed the company’s commitment to continuity. “Ikhwezi Publishers remains resolute. Our weekly publication will continue, with our team temporarily working remotely to ensure uninterrupted service to our clients and readers,” she said.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
