Police in Gqeberha have launched an intensive manhunt following a deadly mass shooting in Kwadwesi that claimed the lives of four people and left two others seriously injured on Saturday night.
According to police, officers responded to reports of a shooting and, upon arrival, discovered three victims – two women and one man – inside the house. All three had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to their heads and faces and were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
A fourth victim, a woman who was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, later died from her injuries. Two other women survived the attack and remain hospitalized.
Preliminary investigations indicate that four-armed men wearing balaclavas entered the property and demanded to see one of the victims. The suspects allegedly demanded money from those present and instructed them to open their banking applications on their cellphones.
Police said the suspects subsequently opened fire on the group before fleeing the scene with all the victims’ cellphones.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata condemned the attack and appealed to the public to assist police in tracking down those responsible.
“We are dealing with ruthless individuals who showed no regard for human life. Our teams are working tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to book. We urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward,” said Ncata.
The motive for the attack remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
