Taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni is expected to appear before the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of extortion linked to an alleged R2 million scheme targeting a businessman in the mining industry.
Sibanyoni was arrested in Gauteng as part of an investigation involving four suspects following a case opened in November 2025 by a mining boss from Mpumalanga.
According to investigators, the suspects allegedly attempted to extort more than R2 million from the businessman operating in the mining sector in Kwaggafontein.
Authorities say investigations revealed that Sibanyoni allegedly played a role in the extortion operation, which reportedly involved threats and pressure aimed at forcing the businessman to pay large sums of money.
The high-profile arrest has intensified public interest due to Sibanyoni’s repeated mention during proceedings at the Madlanga Commission, where testimony has touched on alleged police information leaks, criminal underworld rivalries and a previous assassination attempt against him.
His name has surfaced several times during evidence presented before the commission, placing him at the centre of allegations involving organised criminal networks and interference in law enforcement investigations.
Sibanyoni and his co-accused are expected to formally face extortion-related charges when they appear in court, while investigators continue probing the broader network allegedly linked to the case.
