The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has provisionally withdrawn the fraud and corruption case against Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and his co-accused.
The charges stemmed from allegations surrounding the appointment of Brigadier Dineo Mokwele to head Crime Intelligence’s Technical Support Services unit. Khumalo and six other officials were arrested by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) in connection with the matter.
National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Andy Mothibi approved the withdrawal after considering representations from the accused and an IDAC memorandum. The NPA said the investigation has not yet been finalised, and the matter cannot be placed back on the court roll without written approval from the NDPP.
The decision comes after questions were raised over aspects of the investigation, including evidence relating to Mokwele’s qualifications and suitability for the position.
