A 28-year-old man has been arrested in Mthatha for possession of suspected stolen property following an operation by the Mthatha Crime Intelligence Unit and the OR Tambo District Task Team.
The suspect was arrested at about 1.30am on Tuesday, 18 August, at Payne locality.
Police recovered eight fencing mesh net wires valued at approximately R8,800 and six vehicle radiators worth about R18,000 from the suspect’s premises.
The items are believed to have been stolen from two trucks that were allegedly looted along the N2 near Ultra City on Thursday, 13 August, at about 3am.
One of the trucks, reportedly belonging to Mthatha Hardware in Sibangweni locality, was allegedly burnt in the middle of the road, resulting in a blockade.
OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Norman Modishana commended the Crime Intelligence members and the district task team for the operation.
Police investigations are continuing as they work to identify and arrest other suspects linked to the alleged looting.
The 28-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
