State seeks 15-year jail term for Julius Malema over 2018 firearm incident

The South African state is seeking a 15-year prison sentence for Julius Malema following his conviction in connection with a 2018 firearm discharge incident.
Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), is expected to appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court next week for sentencing after being found guilty in 2025 on multiple charges. These include unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, and reckless endangerment.
The charges stem from an incident during the EFF’s fifth-anniversary rally at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in 2018, where Malema was seen discharging what appeared to be a firearm.
During the sentencing proceedings, prosecutors have argued for a custodial sentence of up to 15 years, citing the seriousness of the offences. A social worker has recommended a suspended sentence instead of direct imprisonment, but the state has formally requested the full 15-year term.
Malema has criticised the state’s approach, describing it as an attempt to impose the maximum penalty. His legal team has indicated plans to appeal the conviction, maintaining that the ruling was flawed.
