Sibiya’s future in custody hangs on Tuesday’s bail ruling

Former Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya will learn on Tuesday whether he will be released on bail or remain behind bars while facing serious criminal charges.

The Randburg Magistrate’s Court is expected to deliver its decision following last week’s bail proceedings, during which questions were raised about a man identified as “Mr M” and his alleged contact with Sibiya’s wife.

The court heard that Mr M had contacted Sizakele Dlamini, allegedly expressing unhappiness with how Sibiya was portraying him during the proceedings. Dlamini submitted an affidavit in support of her husband’s bail application.

Sibiya has remained in custody since his arrest last month at a strip club in Sandton.

He faces charges including rape, human trafficking, the alleged sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl and contraventions of the Firearms Control Act.

The bail decision comes a day after the South African Police Service confirmed that Sibiya was no longer employed by the organisation, with effect from Monday, 12 October 2026.

His departure followed his resignation, which was tendered by his legal representative shortly after disciplinary proceedings against him began.
