The Eastern Cape AIDS Council (ECAC) and Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa will lead the provincial launch of Lenacapavir, a six-monthly injectable HIV prevention drug, at KwaNoxolo in Nelson Mandela Bay on Thursday, 15 October.
Lenacapavir is a long-acting form of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) that offers an alternative to daily oral medication for people seeking to prevent HIV infection. The Eastern Cape is among the provinces prioritised for the first phase of the national rollout.
By 30 June 2026, 1,427 clients had started using Lenacapavir at 49 healthcare facilities across Alfred Nzo, Buffalo City Metro, Nelson Mandela Bay and OR Tambo. Nelson Mandela Bay accounted for 316 clients at 13 facilities.
The rollout aims to expand HIV prevention choices, improve adherence and reach populations at increased risk, including adolescent girls and young women, pregnant and breastfeeding women, sex workers and other vulnerable groups.
Residents attending the launch will also have access to healthcare services through the Department of Health’s Services on Wheels, including HIV testing, TB screening, STI services, contraceptives, PrEP, pregnancy testing, eye care, dental services and cervical cancer screening.
