The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms expected to affect parts of the country , particularly the extreme north-east of the Northern Cape, the North West province, and the Free State.
According to SAWS, an upper-air system known as a cut-off low is creating favourable conditions for the development of severe storms, which could lead to minor but disruptive impacts in affected areas.
The weather service cautioned that localised damage to infrastructure and informal settlements may occur, while heavy downpours could result in flooding of low-lying areas, roads, and bridges. Falling trees may also obstruct minor roads, posing additional risks to motorists and communities.
Residents in the affected provinces have been urged to remain alert and exercise caution, especially in flood-prone and low-lying regions.
Looking ahead, SAWS says conditions on Thursday and Friday are expected to be partly cloudy and warm in most areas. However, cooler conditions will persist in parts of the east and south, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers likely over central and eastern regions of the country.
