Mabuyane maintains de-registration was irregular amid new claims

Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has reiterated that his de-registration from a Master’s programme at University of Fort Hare was “irregular, procedurally flawed and unjust,” as new claims emerge supporting his stance.

The Premier said recent social media posts by former Senate members, along with a sworn affidavit from a former university official, appear to back his long-standing position that due process was not followed.

According to Mabuyane, the affidavit raises serious concerns about the integrity of the process and points to possible interference by Vice-Chancellor Buhlungu.

“It is deeply troubling that a matter of this nature… may have originated from actions that were irregular and potentially politically motivated,” the statement said.

The controversy has, for years, subjected the Premier to allegations of wrongdoing, which he continues to reject as “baseless and unfounded,” citing reputational damage.

Mabuyane also suggested the issue may be linked to past tensions with university leadership, particularly during a period marked by student deaths when he called for greater transparency and accountability.

The Premier confirmed that his legal team is reviewing the affidavit and all available evidence, and may consider further action to protect his reputation.

“We reiterate our commitment to truth, fairness, and due process,” the statement concluded.
