Gauteng health system under pressure as malaria cases surge

The Gauteng Department of Health is facing renewed pressure as malaria cases and deaths rise sharply across the province, raising concerns about imported infections and gaps in early detection.

Health data shows that Gauteng recorded 666 malaria cases and seven deaths throughout 2025. However, within just the first three months of 2026, the province has already confirmed 414 cases and 11 deaths — a trend officials describe as alarming given the short time frame.

Public health experts say the spike is largely linked to increased travel to malaria-endemic regions, with some patients only seeking treatment after symptoms become severe. This has placed additional strain on healthcare facilities, particularly emergency units.

Symptoms such as fever, chills, headaches and fatigue are often mistaken for flu-like illnesses, delaying diagnosis and treatment. Health authorities warn that late presentation continues to contribute to avoidable deaths.

The department says it is strengthening surveillance, improving screening at health facilities, and reinforcing awareness campaigns to ensure early detection and treatment.

Officials are also calling on residents to take preventive measures seriously, including using insect repellent, sleeping under mosquito nets when necessary, and wearing protective clothing when travelling to high-risk areas.

Authorities have warned that without stronger public vigilance and early intervention, the upward trend could continue in the coming months.
