Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia has moved to bolster security ahead of the planned nationwide demonstrations on 30 June 2026, holding talks with representatives of the private security industry amid growing concerns over potential unrest.
Meeting industry leaders on Wednesday, Cachalia described the private security sector as a critical “force multiplier” that could assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) in maintaining stability during a period of heightened tensions and public mobilisation.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between public and private security structures as authorities prepare for demonstrations linked largely to immigration-related concerns.
Cachalia warned that threats of violence posed a serious national security risk, particularly in light of the devastating July 2021 unrest, which resulted in widespread destruction, looting and loss of life.
“Government is addressing immigration-related challenges through the appropriate channels, but all stakeholders have a responsibility to ensure that South Africa remains stable, peaceful and safe,” he said.
The meeting identified enhanced intelligence sharing, coordinated planning and the pooling of resources as key measures to prevent violence and maintain order on June 30.
Private security representatives welcomed the engagement and pledged their support to ensure that demonstrations take place peacefully and within the law. Industry leaders indicated that preparations were already underway and that resources were being made available to support law enforcement efforts.
