Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla will have to continue facing prosecution over her alleged role in the July 2021 unrest after the court ruled that the case against her must proceed.
The daughter of former president Jacob Zuma had approached the Durban High Court in an attempt to have the charges against her dismissed, arguing that the State had failed to present sufficient evidence to justify the prosecution.
However, the court’s decision means the case will continue, keeping Zuma-Sambudla in the spotlight over the deadly unrest that erupted following her father’s imprisonment in July 2021.
She faces charges linked to social media posts she allegedly published during the violence, which the State claims encouraged public violence and terrorism.
Her defence team, led by Advocate Dali Mpofu, has challenged the State’s case and disputed the allegations against her.
The July 2021 unrest, which mainly affected KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, left more than 300 people dead and caused extensive damage to businesses and infrastructure.
