Gauteng police have arrested ten suspects, aged between 30 and 54, and recovered nine firearms following a shootout with police in Cleveland, Johannesburg, on Monday evening.
The incident occurred at approximately 19:36 on 21 September 2026, when police officers conducting patrols in the area spotted a suspicious Hyundai H100 fitted with blue lights and a siren.
According to police, the vehicle stopped when officers approached but drove off when they attempted to intercept it. Police called for backup and continued following the vehicle.
The vehicle eventually stopped, and three suspects allegedly jumped out and opened fire at the police. A shootout ensued, during which two suspects fled the scene on foot while a third suspect was fatally shot.
Police then searched the Hyundai H100 and allegedly found ten suspects inside the vehicle.
Nine firearms, along with magazines and live ammunition, were recovered during the search.
Cleveland police have opened cases of murder, attempted murder, attempted business robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
