The countdown to South Africa’s 2026 municipal elections has officially begun after the government confirmed 4 November 2026 as the country’s next voting day.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa gazetted the election date on Friday, triggering the official election period and bringing voter registration to a close as the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) prepares for the polls.
With the voters’ roll now closed, the IEC is expected to roll out the remaining stages of the electoral process, including candidate nominations, campaigning and voter education, ahead of election day.
Hlabisa thanked South Africans who registered to vote during the IEC’s registration drives and called on all political parties, candidates and voters to help ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.
He also encouraged all eligible South Africans, particularly women, young people, persons with disabilities and residents in rural communities, to exercise their democratic right by casting their ballots on 4 November.
