The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced the recall of certain Mercedes-Benz trucks and Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles due to safety defects that could increase the risk of accidents and vehicle fires.
The recall affects 153 Mercedes-Benz Atego 967, Actros 963, Arocs 964 and eActros 983 trucks sold nationwide from 2022 onwards. According to the NCC, the recall follows a self-disclosure by supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG, which identified a manufacturing defect in the steering ball joints.
The defect could cause excessive wear, leading to the steering components fracturing and, in some cases, making the truck impossible to steer, increasing the risk of a crash.
The NCC also announced the recall of 141 Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles fitted with a 1.5-litre engine and sold between March 2022 and March 2026.
The affected vehicles may experience engine damage caused by bent or broken connecting rods due to engine misfires. In the worst-case scenario, the defect could result in a vehicle fire while driving.
Owners of the affected vehicles are urged to take them to their nearest authorised Daimler Truck or Stellantis dealership for inspection and repairs. The NCC said all corrective work will be carried out free of charge.
