The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has intensified security measures and activated comprehensive contingency plans ahead of planned nationwide demonstrations set to take place on 30 June 2026.
In a statement issued on Monday, Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Vuyisile Ncata, confirmed that the province’s law enforcement agencies have elevated their state of readiness across all eight districts to ensure public safety and maintain order during the protests.
The heightened security operation forms part of the Eastern Cape Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (ProvJoints), which has identified potential hotspots across the province. Additional police personnel and law enforcement resources have been deployed, while the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will provide support in areas affected by gang-related violence.
As part of the preparations, Joint Operational Centres (JOCs) will be activated in all eight districts and will report directly to the Provincial Joint Operational Centre (PROV JOC) to facilitate real-time monitoring and coordinated responses.
Lieutenant General Ncata stressed that while authorities respect citizens’ constitutional right to protest, law enforcement will take decisive action against any unlawful conduct.
“While we acknowledge and respect the constitutional right of citizens to engage in peaceful demonstrations, we will not hesitate to act against any acts of lawlessness, violence, intimidation, or criminality,” he said.
Ncata further warned that no private individuals or groups would be permitted to perform law enforcement duties during the demonstrations.
The police have also appealed to community leaders and protest organisers to cooperate with authorities to ensure that the demonstrations remain peaceful, orderly and within the confines of the law.
