Two male suspects, aged 32 and 36, are expected to appear before the Matlala Periodical Court on Thursday, 18 June 2026, on charges of pointing of a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm following a cash-in-transit-related incident in the Gamatlala policing area.
The suspects were arrested by Matlala police after an incident that occurred on Monday, 15 June 2026, at approximately 11:30 in Mabopane Village.
According to reports, a 52-year-old man was driving an open Toyota bakkie escorting a cash-in-transit vehicle along the Seshego–Gilead Road (R567) when a white Toyota Venture overtook the truck. It is alleged that a passenger in the Toyota Venture then pointed a firearm at the cash-in-transit vehicle.
Members of the cash-in-transit crew reportedly returned fire, after which the suspects fled the scene. The suspects allegedly abandoned their vehicle and escaped into a nearby house and surrounding bushes.
Police later traced the owner of the abandoned Toyota Venture, who provided information that led investigators to the identity of the driver. One of the suspects, who had sustained gunshot injuries, was arrested and later assisted police in locating a second suspect.
Upon arrival at the identified location, police found the second suspect in possession of a firearm. He was also injured and immediately taken into custody.
The firearm and the abandoned Toyota Venture were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
