North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs Oageng Gaoage Molapisi has wished initiates, traditional leaders, parents and caregivers a safe and successful winter initiation season.
The 2026 winter initiation season officially began on 15 May and will run until 17 July.
According to the department, the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee approved 92 male initiation schools and 29 female initiation schools across the province.
Molapisi urged initiates and stakeholders to prioritise safety and comply with all legal and health requirements, including proper registration, medical screening and monitoring.
He also warned against illegal initiation schools, stressing that the safety and wellbeing of initiates must remain a top priority.
The department, together with traditional leaders, law enforcement and health officials, will continue monitoring initiation schools throughout the season.
