Eight appear in court over Eastern Cape tavern murder

Eight men have appeared in the Bholothwa Magistrate’s Court in connection with the murder of a 25-year-old man whose body was found near a tavern in the Eastern Cape.

The accused, Lucky Nokemane (36), Mthozami Mfanta (39), Lusanda Piyana (45), Andile Cetywayo (36), Gcobani Chebetyu (35), Sibulele Antoni (39), Sibusiso Makeleni (36) and Sinethemba Cetywayo (35), were arrested on 7 July and remanded in custody until 15 July for a formal bail application.

Police allege the victim was assaulted at a tavern in the Bholothwa administrative area on 6 July after Nokemane accused him of previously attempting to rob him. Nokemane allegedly attacked the man before his co-accused joined in, assaulting him with knives and dragging him out of the tavern.

The victim’s body was discovered the following morning in a nearby donga with multiple injuries.

During the investigation, police also recovered a revolver with three live rounds of ammunition allegedly hidden by Nokemane near the tavern. He now faces an additional charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
