The African National Congress (ANC) has disbanded its Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) following a failed provincial conference and a court interdict that halted internal processes in the province.
The decision was taken by the party’s national leadership after ongoing internal divisions made it impossible to successfully convene and conclude a provincial conference, effectively stalling the province’s organisational leadership structures.
In place of the PEC, the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has approved the appointment of a Provincial Task Team, which will take over day-to-day organisational responsibilities and work to stabilise and regularise party operations in the Eastern Cape.
The move is understood to be part of broader internal restructuring efforts aimed at addressing factional disputes and restoring organisational unity within the province. Party officials say the intervention is consistent with the ANC’s constitution, which allows the national structure to step in when provincial leadership structures are unable to function effectively.
Despite the disbandment of the PEC, the ANC has stressed that governance in the Eastern Cape province itself remains unaffected, as the change only relates to internal party structures and not to government administration.
