Police in Afsondering, near Matatiele in the Eastern Cape, are continuing the search for five detainees who escaped from police holding cells on 4 April 2026. Three of the eight escapees have since been re-arrested and are back in custody.
According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Majola Nkohli, police investigations and tracing operations remain underway to locate the remaining suspects.
The five escapees still at large are:
Asiphe Yawu
Abraham Gobozi
Kwanele Mzala
Thabo Nana
Siphelele Nondolo
Police have warned members of the public not to attempt to apprehend the escapees, as they are considered dangerous.
