SANTACO Eastern Cape rallies behind arrested leaders ahead of bail hearing

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Eastern Cape has expressed strong concern following the recent arrest of two of its senior leaders in Cape Town.
Eastern Cape SANTACO Co-Convenor Simphiwe “Gabs” Mtshala and Simphiwe Gxumayo, Chairperson of the Matatiele Taxi Association, are among seven individuals arrested across three provinces. They face charges including extortion, money laundering, and racketeering linked to long-distance bus operators, with allegations involving the collection of so-called protection fees. The group is expected to appear in court for a bail application on 4 May.
In a statement attributed to Eastern Cape Provincial Convener Mzwandile Nkewana, SANTACO said it views the allegations with seriousness but emphasized that both Mtshala and Gxumayo must be regarded as innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Nkewana noted growing concern within the organisation that repeated arrests of its members could be perceived as an attempt to destabilise leadership structures and disrupt continuity within the taxi industry. While reaffirming respect for law enforcement and the judicial system, he highlighted the potential consequences such developments may have on governance and ongoing sector processes.
According to SANTACO, both leaders have played important roles in their communities and within the taxi industry. Mtshala, in particular, has been recognised for his involvement in promoting peace and mediating conflicts within the sector, helping to maintain stability during challenging periods.
The organisation also pointed to the role played by both leaders during the unrest in July 2021, where they contributed to efforts aimed at protecting businesses and shopping centres, underscoring their commitment to community safety.
SANTACO Eastern Cape said the absence of the two leaders is already being felt, especially in ongoing peacebuilding initiatives at a critical time for the industry.
The organisation confirmed that its members will travel to Cape Town from 4 to 6 May 2026 to attend the bail hearing in support of the accused. Nkewana said this show of solidarity would be conducted with full respect for the legal process.
He further called on members, stakeholders, and the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and allow the judicial proceedings to unfold without interference.
SANTACO Eastern Cape reiterated its commitment to promoting unity, peace, and lawful conduct within the transport sector.
