The Mayor of Raymond Mhlaba Municipality, Cllr Nomhle Sango, has stepped in to assist 20 elderly residents in KwaMaqoma with emergency food parcels following disruptions to SASSA grant payments caused by technical system failures.
She was joined by Cllr Nomonde Geza of the Amathole District Municipality in a joint intervention reflecting cooperative governance.
Mayor Sango stressed the importance of social grants, saying: “Social grants are not merely a monthly deposit; they are a lifeline. For many of our elders, that grant is the difference between a meal on the table and an empty kitchen.”
She added: “We want our people to know that their municipality stands with them during this difficult time.”
One elderly beneficiary expressed gratitude, saying: “We did not know where our next meal would come from, and you came to us. May God bless you for remembering us.”
The municipality has encouraged affected residents to seek assistance at their nearest SASSA offices as efforts continue to resolve the payment issues.
