Pressure mounts on Minister Tolashe over SUV controversy

An investigation by the Daily Maverick has revealed that Minister of Social Development, Sisisi Tolashe is facing mounting scrutiny after allegedly diverting two luxury Chinese SUVs intended for the ANC Women’s League to her children.

According to the report, the vehicles were initially presented as a donation to the ANC Women’s League. However, vehicle registration records show that the white BAIC SUV was registered in her son Nanilethu’s name on 15 April 2024, while a yellow BAIC SUV was registered in her daughter Kanyisa’s name on the same day.

The matter has raised serious concerns about a potential breach of parliamentary rules as well as the African National Congress internal regulations. Tolashe reportedly told the ANC’s Integrity Commission that she had registered the vehicles in her children’s names to “safeguard” them from creditors.

The controversy escalated on Friday, 24 April, when the two vehicles were reportedly driven into the parking lot at Luthuli House, the ANC’s headquarters.

The ANC Integrity Commission is expected to investigate the matter, with possible disciplinary action looming. Meanwhile, opposition parties including the Democratic Alliance and ActionSA have filed formal complaints, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.

Calls for accountability are growing as the situation continues to unfold, placing further pressure on Tolashe to respond to the allegations.
